Suleiman Pasha mosque
Information
The mosque was built in the 16th century by the conqueror of Rhodes Suleiman I, the Magnificent. The erection of the large mosque in a dominating position, across the highest point of the Market Street (today Sokratous street) was the most significant intervention made by the Ottoman Turks in the urban tissue of the Medieval city.
The monument has been renovated after the 1856 powder explosion in St John’s church nearby, as well as the 1863 earthquakes .
The monument consists of three elaborately decorated square halls, covered by domes, two rewaks and a minaret of 34,50m height.
The mosque has been fully restored by the Hellenic ministry of culture, receiving the EUROPA NOSTRA award of 2006.
