SAINT FANOURIOS (PAIAL EL DIN MEDJIT)

Information

It is on the homonymous street of the Medieval City of Rhodes. It was built in the 13th century AD. It is cross-shaped and its interior is decorated by wonderful frescoes. We have no testimony regarding the name of the temple prior to the Ottoman period, when it operated as a temple by the name Paial el din medjit. In 1946 the church was inaugurated and dedicated to Saint Fanourios.
This church still continues operating today. The worship of Saint Fanourios appears to have begun from Rhodes and extended initially to Crete and then to the other parts of Greece. Various sources report that as workers dug outside and south from the walls of the Medieval City in order to collect building material, they discovered the ruins of a church. Among others, the icon of Saint Fanourios with a military uniform, surrounded by scenes depicting his martyrdom, came to light. The icon was obviously on a fresco. The first miracle of Saint Fanourios was the liberation of three Cretan priests from pirates, who carried to Crete a copy of the archetypal icon which was found in Rhodes.
