Agios Nikolaos or Monastery of Saint Augustine

Information

It is located on the south-west on Omirou street, with access also from Andronikou street. It comprises the church and the court on the south, east and north from the main temple, with a common wall from cells on the eastern court.
Recent studies showed the initial existence of a single-space 14th century church. For this reason, in the 15th century the south chapel was added by Dragonino Claveli, which was dedicated to Saint Nicholas and was used as a burial place for his family.
This monastery of the order of Augustinians was one of the most important catholic monasteries of Rhodes. The other one was the monastery of the order of Franciscans and it was the one of Panagia of Niki (Victory).
During the Second World War, a bomb destroyed half the church and its surrounding space.
The site has recently been restored by the Ministry of Culture.
