Church of our Lady of the Castle

Information

The Church of our Lady of the Castle is probably the earliest example of inscribed cruciform type of church, dating back to at least the 11th century. It was the Orthodox Cathedral of Rhodes in Byzantine era, becoming the Latin cathedral under the Knights.
During the ottoman occupation it was converted into a mosque. A porch covered by three arches as well as a minaret was added to the main entrance. The additions were demolished during the Italian occupation.
The church is being restored by the Hellenic Ministry of culture
