Melekouni
Information
In the island of Rhodes, according to tradition, in marriages and christenings, melekouni, a sweet made of sesame and honey, is served. The women of the village gather all together and make melekouni singing and rejoicing, treating the guests afterwards in church.
Melekouni comes from Ancient Greece, being slightly differentiated through the ages, under byzantine and italian influence. Its name comes from meli(=honey) and kouni(=kouna= from the ancient Greek name for sead= kokon) .
Melekouni is distinguished for its high nutricional capacity. For its preparation, thyme honey, sesame, almonds, peels of orange and different spices are used. It is cut in small pieces, in the shape of a rhombus.
