Traditional nutrition
Traditional nutrition in Rhodes is based on crop production products, olive oil, vegetables, fruit, yogurt, fish and meat, mentioned even in ancient manuscripts.
In a traditional meal, there are olives (green crushed olives, zupa olives), vegetables, cheese, bread (with Anise, olive or onion Tiganopsomo, Eptazimo), cereals (Pretzels, Tachinosoupa, Trahanas, Tsouvras), stuffed leaves, rice pudding, pies (with greens, fried pies, with crushed sesame seeds (Tachinopites), salted fish, meat and local wine.
Local herbal beverages are alisfakia, glyfoni, sapsycho, sage, camomile, mint and greek coffee.
Local sweets, based on honey and fruits, are melekouni, almond sweets, halva with semolina, xerotigana, diples, takakia, jam, loukoumi, vanilla, mouchalepi, baklava and samali.
The products of Rhodes may be obtained in shops in town and in the villages. Considerable experience is a visit to a traditional bakery and women’s cooperatives, wineries and distilleries, mainly in the mountainous areas of Rhodes.
