The Butterfly Valley
It is twenty five kilometers away from the city of Rhodes, near Kalamonas, and it is crossed by the river Pelekanos.
It is a rare habitat, which is a home to the butterfly Panaxia Quadripunctaria, which makes its appearance in this unique natural park during the period from mid-June to mid-September.
Specially formed paths and wooden bridges appear among the incredibly beautiful vegetation, the waterlily ponds, the small waterfalls and the running waters.
The wooden steps on the edge of the valley lead to the Monastery of Panagia Kalopetras, which was built by Dimitris Ipsilantis on 1782.
The Natural History Museum of Rhodes operates at the entrance of the valley. Among the exhibits are endemic and rare species of the broader area of the Valley, which are displayed in cases representing the conditions of the natural environment.
There is also a hatchery and a showcase of butterflies, with living exhibits, a library and a contemporary conceptual and botanical laboratory.
