Byzantine fortification of Rhodes – Collachium towers
Information
The Byzantine fortification of Rhodes (7th – 13th century) divided the city into three parts: the acropolis (later Palace of the Grand Master), the Collachium (upper city) and Burgo (lower city).
In front of the main wall with its towers there was a rampart and a moat. Parts of this fortification are preserved today, integrated in later buildings, mainly in the Collachium area. During the Knights’ Period (1309-1522), the city is expanded and the knight walls encompass an area larger than the Byzantine walls by approximately two fifths.
