Ancient Cemeteries of Rhodes

Information

Vast areas with ancient cemeteries have been excavated, in the north areas of the ancient city, nowadays the areas of Analipsi (st John’s burials), Rodini and Karakonero.
Most of the burials of the classical era are simple graves covered by limestone, with a stele bearing the name of the diseased, or an epigram, or a relief.
During the Hellenistic era, big funerary complexes, belonging to families or clubs, are raised. Those were buildings carved in rock, forming a portico, an antechamber and the main chamber, with the seats for the sarcophagus carved on all sides. On the exterior, the buildings bear pillasters and a pyramidal coverage.
