SAINT SPYRIDON (KAVAKLI CAMI)
Information
It is situated on Athinas square. The temple took its current form in the 13th century, when it was built on the ruins of a Hellenistic three-aisled construction. The building bore a semi-round sanctuary arch and a floor with marble pavement and frescoes. A newer 16th century temple, built on the ruins of the previous one, kept the arch and part of the frescoes. New frescoes and a burial crypt with frescoes under the floor of the northern aisle are preserved from this period, including, among others, the tomb of the owners of the temple, Andreas (father) and Georgios (son).
During the Turkish Occupation, the temple was converted into a mosque with the addition of a minaret on the south-west corner thereof and two prayer niches (mihrab) on the south-east internal corner of the temple, under the name Kavakli Mestgid, due to a plane (kavak) existing on its court. Its frescoes were covered during that time, and thus, they have been kept until today.
