Nymphaea of Rhodes
Information
The ancient Acropolis of Rhodes, on the highest western part of the ancient city, was full of temples, public buildings, nympaea etc. The monuments come from the Hellenistic and post-Hellenistic era (3rd – 2nd c. B.C.).
The nymphaea were worship areas for the nymphs, lesser goddesses of ancient Greece, protector spirits of nature, forests and seas. Situated on the north part of the acropolis, they are subterranean buildings, with stairs, niches, statues all carved in the rock, with water springs, brooks and trees.
The first excavations took place during the Italian occupation, (1912-1945). The restoration works on the nymphaea emerged in 1996.
